Law & Order franchise creator Dick Wolf tweaks the formula by giving viewers a Sherlock Holmes-type character to get to know (and root for) in this riveting series that examines a violent crime from the time it's committed to the apprehension of the culprit. Detective Robert Goran (Vincent D'Onofrio) is the brilliant-if-strange genius of the NYPD's Major Case Squad, assisted by his Watsonian partner, Detective Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe).

The alternating episode casting meant Vincent D'Onofrio's episodes were always strong, but the alternate weeks were just passable. The addition of Jeff Goldblum to the cast last season fixed this situation and improved the show quite a bit.
