Novel mechanics and a really fun overall aesthetic are dampened somewhat by a Mario-Party-esque level of random unfairness. Really enjoyed approaching each level as its own little puzzle, but it was a downer when it didn't matter much in the end.
This one is a lot more fun if you add a mod to turn off the giant zombies, and then play through just using infantry/snipers/barricades. (and Chooser mod + one that allows duplicates)
You know, I didn't have too much trouble with the giant zombies, since by that time I had a wealth of explosive stuff that could deal with them easily. My main issue was falling too far behind on the main score bars early in the game.
Yeah it's almost impossible to win the first play-through - I don't think you can even turn mods on at that point IIRC, so you're stuck with a motley assortment of units
Fairly easy on default, yet nearly impossible to win without using the chooser or combatant modifier - since it often gives you a poor selection of mercenaries. The balance could use a bit of work, since chooser lets you faceroll - but overall fun.
